As part of its "MAZINGIRA NA AMANI" program, the shujaa initiative organization celebrated the Free African Week under the accompaniment of "African Rising". This event was held in a camp for displaced people, bringing together more than 50 women engaged in crucial discussions on the challenges they face, including those related to the conservation of world heritage, particularly Virunga Park.
Context and issues
Virunga Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a rich but fragile ecosystem. The women present shared their experiences of searching for vital resources, such as dead wood, for their daily survival. This search is exacerbated by armed conflicts and natural disasters, often intensified by climate change, which are forcing thousands of people to flee their homes.
Testimonies and resilience
The participants’ testimonies highlighted not only the struggle for survival, but also their resilience and commitment to environmental protection. By sharing their stories, they illustrated how environmental degradation affects their daily lives and those of their families, while strengthening their determination to contribute to peace and sustainability.
Call to action
Shujaa Initiative congratulates all participants for their commitment and courage. The organization also calls on others to join this vital fight for peace and a healthy environment. Collaboration and solidarity are essential to overcome environmental and social challenges, and together, it is possible to bring about lasting change.
It should be noted that Shujaa Initiative, in partnership with NATUREL and African Rising, continues to work towards a future where peace and the environment coexist in harmony.
